TOP 10 MOST ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SOLAR
TOP 10 MOST ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SOLAR
When it comes to solar, everyone seems to have an opinion these days, and it seems to be getting harder and harder to decipher fake news from facts. The truth is there is A LOT of information out there, and we want to make sure Manitobans have the best information to make a clear choice if solar is right for you. This article will hopefully help you answer some of those top of mind questions that you’ve been pondering.
Let’s start with a little history lesson. Solar energy or what was known as the photovoltaic effect isn’t new by any means, in fact it was discovered back in 1839 by a physicist working in France. By the 1860’s the world was introduced to the first solar powered engines and fast forward to the 1950’s in Washington, the first solar cell that successfully converted solar rays to electricity at a 6% efficiency rate was available on the market by Bell laboratories. Continuing on to the 1970’s, we saw the start of the energy crisis in the US, which pushed the federal government to make solar viable and affordable and market it to the public.
By 1973, the first solar building was erected, Solar One, which combined both solar thermal and photovoltaic power. Year over year interest in solar continues to grow, particularly in the residential market. As the research and development continues, costs associated with solar become more and more aligned with home/business owners financial budgets.
Now that we have acclimated ourselves with a bit of back history, let’s get back to business, let’s bust some of the myths commonly associated with Solar Energy.
1. Isn’t it too cold in Canada (Manitoba) for solar panels to work?
In layman’s terms, solar panels need light not heat to perform, however, output is reduced in the winter (or overcast days) due to less available irradiance (energy) from the sun. Solar panels are tested at 25 C, and are considered most efficient between 15-35 C however, most panels work down to -45C.
2. What maintenance is required on my solar system? Do my panels need to be cleaned?
We always recommend an annual preventative maintenance. This helps catch any issues or faults before problems arise.
As most systems sit on the roof, dust build up, bird droppings, and leaves are common factors that can prevent your system from working to its highest potential. We generally recommend an annual spring clean.
To clean just use water and a microfibre washcloth, please do not use any solvents.
3. What happens if there is a power outage on the utility end?
If your solar system is connected to the grid, your system will automatically shut off during a power outage. This prevents back feed which can cause serious injuries to utilities workers when repairing the lines.
4. How much do systems cost?
This is a loaded question and it really all depends on the home owner’s consumption. That being said there are things that can effect your cost like: Electrical service, if you prefer a certain aesthetic (ie: black panels over blue panels) and what you are trying to offset. KEEP IN MIND THAT YES THE SYSTEM MAY BE LARGER BUT THEN THE SAVINGS ARE AS WELL. If you would like a personalized quote please contact us.
5. How do the panels attach to the roof?
Panels are attached with approved anchoring systems that attach to the decking sheets and trusses. The membrane between the anchor and the shingle prevents any leakage from outside sources into your home.
6. How many solar panels can I fit on my roof?
We use specific software to use the optimal available roof space while taking into consideration the existing electrical service. If there isn’t enough space in your existing service, we may suggest an electrical service upgrade.
7. Do I need to a service upgrade to my panel to add solar?
If the existing service does not have available capacity for your desired system, yes you will need to upgrade your service. Don’t fret, during our initial site visit we check your service panel and will give you a recommendation if any upgrades are required
8. How do I know if my roof or property is good for solar?
The ideal roof space is south facing with no shading. That being said, there are alot of work arounds, the best thing to do is book a free site visit.
9. Is there a way to configure the system so that if there ever was a big (long) power outage you could redirect the power for local use rather than sending it to MB Hydro?
Yes, home energy storage systems are available to provide homes with essential loads or full back in the event of a power outage.
10. How does solar work?
The photovoltaic cells absorb sunlight which energizes the cell. The energized cell now creates an electrical current, which in turn is inverted to power your home.
